Journal, 1847-1848.

Journal of Hugh Calhoun, written on board the U.S.S. Ohio in 1847-8. Calhoun labeled his account a "serio-comic journal of a cruize." He also recorded numerous anecdotes from his previous voyages. Several of his original poems are included. The cruise began in New York in June, 1847, and took Calhoun to Brazil, then on to the Pacific, where the Ohio joined the Pacific Squadron. Calhoun also describes the Ohio's part in the seige and surrender of Veracruz, Mexico, in the spring of 1847.
